“FUN HOME” Sweeps at the Tony’s—Women Make History
We are still buzzing from “Fun Home’s” sweeping win at the Tony Awards last night! What a night it was for lesbians and women in general. “Fun Home” won the grand prize of the night for Best Musical, making it the first lesbian-themed musical and play centered around a lesbian protagonist ever to take the prize. It also garnered prizes in major categories, some of historical significance—Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori became the first all-female team to win a Tony for best score. Ms. Kron also took home a Tony for best book. “Fun Home” is based on a 2006 memoir written by our nation’s most prominent lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel (pictured center), which has sold over a quarter-million copies. Bechdel was awarded the esteemed MacArthur Grant while the musical was a finalist for a Pulitzer this past year. This followed the play’s extended sold-out run at the Public Theater before its move to Broadway, where it is also met with sold-out audiences. If you haven’t seen it, we urge you to go immediately to see this powerful, moving and original piece of theater. We salute Lisa Kron and Alison Bechdel, two lesbians who have captured America’s attention with their talent, creativity and voice, for representing lesbians in graphic novels, comics, and theater, with so much heart and truth.
Join us in celebrating all the strides lesbians have made at our #Back2Tabac #NYCPride2015 fundraiser event on Wednesday June 24th. We have so much to be proud about. Let’s celebrate! And you’ll also be helping to support lesbian storytelling and visibility through our project.
